Does everybody question that whenever they see these apams? Just me? Okay.
Basically the things you need to do the awesome shmosome apam |
Anyways, when I came by to Aunty Inn's house she has already prepared the batter and the fillings. She made the Gula Melaka Coconut filling just because we like the old kampung taste better than the typical blueberry or strawberry jam or other fillings. Go old-school kampung style! :D
The next step is to divide the batter into several bowls so you can mix each of them with the colours that you want. During this session (this sounds really like a baking class :p), we opted to go for 5 colours. Pink, yellow, blue, purple and the original batter colour.
To do this, you just dot in a couple of colour (according to the intense of the colour that you want) into the bowl and just mix em evenly all together. Make sure you grab all the batter so there won't be any sudden spots of weird colour. Hehe
This will turn into bright yellow! |
Polite purple. I'm starting to name them I feel weird |
The original batter :D |
Cups in cups. Cupception? O.o |
Oh I forgot, before that just prepared the paper cups that you are going to use to fill the batter and put it into plastics/porcelain cups like the above picture. This is to make sure that your apam won't go out of shape. Mind you, that they will be steamed so be careful not to use the cups that can melt.

Yes guys, just fill em all in. ALL OF THEM |
Once you're done mixing all the colours, just put it into a piping plastic. Cut off just a tiny wee bit of the piping plastic so you can control the amount of batter you're putting it. My aunty used a medium tall glass to hold the plastic so it won't go around messing the counter top.
Good tip huh? :D
Blatant blue. I just like the word :D |
Do you like the colours? I know I love them! |
Yummy, yummy gula melaka coconut |
This is the Gula Melaka Coconut I mentioned earlier. It tasted so good! :D
The base |
Now, to fill in the cups. Just take the colour that you want and put in some to make the base. Make it about quarter of the cup so it will be thick enough to be the foundation.
Right at the centre is where you should target you filling. I'm just kidding :p |
Take a pair of chopsticks or anything to put in the filling. Take note not to put in too much of the filling as the gula melaka would melt during the steaming and could pop out from the batter.
Cover it all! COVER IT ALL! |
Annnndddd...... just take the same coloured batter that you use, or you could make it a rainbow (as you wish) and cover the top. Fill it in until it's about 3/4 of the cup.
How long will this batter smooth? -___- |
Let it settle and you'll find that the batter will smooth out. The best part of the polkadot is coming! This is how you make the dots. Take the colour that you want and just softly squeeze out the batter and dot it on the batter!
Easy peasy, right? You should really try it!
Polka galore! |
Do it for the rest of the tray and steam it for about 10 - 15 minutes. Your apam polkadots with gula melaka filling is then R-E-A-D-Y! *yeaaayyyyy*
This is how they turned out when I did it with my Aunty Inn :D
It should turn out like this! |
Remember I mentioned about filling in the into too much? This one is example of one. It's still edible mind you. You don't have to throw it away :)
I don't care how it looks like I'm still going to eat it :D |
Beautiful colours |
Wahhhh! Is it okay for me to feel proud to have made these? They're so colourful I'm gonna die! They tasted really good too! Ask Anis if you don't believe me. She tasted it already :D
Thank you Aunty Inn for teaching me this and letting me share with you guys this awesome stuff! God bless you tons! *bows* Okay over sangat dah tu :p Hehe
You should try this too. For the recipe, I think you can just Google it :D
Happy Eating!
